Robert Mapplethorpe was an american photographer who was best known for his black and white photographs; Largely scaled, and highly stylized. His work over the years featured various subjects from celebrity portraits too nudes; both female and male, to Still-life flower images.

– His most controversial work is that of the underground bondage and sadomasochistic BDSM scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s of New York. The homoeroticism of this work fuelled a national debate over the public funding of controversial artworks.

Some of his other subjects included flowers, especially orchids and Calla Lillies. The flowers themselves again like Araki’s work having some sense of aura about them, being sexually referenced to the female body.

The black and white images all have sexual references. The image above of the flower leaning forwards a certain way in the way of performing a sexual act perhaps?  Robert uses the flowers as sexual beings rather then just nature. Again the idea of it linking back too a flower ‘being picked’. With the images being in black and white it makes them seem more of an object, takes the color out of the flower so you cant reference it through colour only movement and presence.

These colour images show movement and are each aesthetically pleasing. These images remind me of sexual organs the angle in which the photographs have been taken. Looking into the flower/into a dark hole/object. The first image of the two flowers standing side by side, having a connection of some sort, intimacy.
